Moving Fragile Items in San Diego Professional Packing & Custom Crating

Moving Fragile Items with San Diego Packing Movers

Most damage in a move doesn’t happen on the truck. It happens in a box that was packed too loosely, stacked under something heavy, or filled without enough cushioning between pieces. A plate breaks because it was laid flat instead of on edge. A framed print cracks because nothing separated it from the frame beside it.

Like Movers LLC (MTR No. 0192555, CPUC CA-T No. 604232, US DOT No. 3820244) packs fragile items as a standard part of our packing and unpacking services across San Diego County. This page covers how we pack breakables, when custom crating is worth it, and what protection actually covers.

What Counts as a Fragile Item

Anything that can’t absorb a knock without changing shape or function:

  • Glassware, china and crystal plates, stemware, serving pieces, decorative glass
  • Framed art, mirrors and glass tabletops anything flat, rigid and breakable
  • Electronics  televisions, monitors, computers, audio equipment
  • Lamps and lighting  shades, glass bases, ceiling fixtures
  • Ceramics and pottery  vases, sculpture, decorative pieces
  • Antiques and heirlooms  older wood, veneer, inlay, marble tops
  • Musical instruments  see our piano moving service for uprights and grands
  • Marble, stone and glass furniture components  tabletops, shelving, cabinet doors

If you’re unsure whether something needs special handling, mention it when you book. It’s easier to plan for it than to improvise on move day.

How We Pack Breakables

Dishes go on edge, not flat. A plate stacked flat takes the full weight of everything above it on one plane. On edge, in a dish barrel with paper between each piece, it resists pressure far better. Same principle for framed art and mirrors vertical, never laid flat under other boxes.

Every item gets wrapped individually, then the box gets filled. Wrapping alone isn’t enough. The empty space around the items is what causes damage, because contents shift in transit. We fill voids with packing paper so nothing moves inside the box.

Small and heavy goes in small boxes. A large box filled with dishes becomes too heavy to handle safely, and weight is what crushes what’s underneath. Books and breakables go in small boxes; light bulky items go in large ones.

Stemware and hollow pieces get stuffed and separated. Crumpled paper inside the bowl of a wine glass, then wrapped, then placed in a cell divider so pieces never touch each other.

Electronics get their cables labelled before disconnection. A photo of the back of each device before unplugging saves an hour of guesswork at the new place. Screens travel upright and padded, never flat with weight on top.

Boxes get marked FRAGILE on multiple sides and loaded last. Fragile boxes go on top of the load, never underneath furniture, and come off first.

Every Like Movers package includes furniture pads, stretch wrap, tape and wardrobe boxes at no extra cost see Like Deals for what’s in each package.

Essential Information for Fragile Item Protection

When You Need Custom Crating

Most fragile items travel safely in a properly packed box. A few don’t.

Custom crating building a wooden crate sized to the specific piece makes sense for large framed art and mirrors beyond standard picture-box sizes, stone and glass tabletops, sculpture and irregular shapes that can’t be cushioned evenly in a box, and high-value single pieces where the cost of the crate is small next to the cost of the item.

It’s not necessary for ordinary dishes, standard-size framed prints, or electronics that still have their original packaging. If you kept the box your television came in, that box is already the right crate.

Tell us what you’re moving during the estimate and we’ll say plainly whether crating is worth it for your pieces or whether standard packing is enough.

What Protection Actually Covers

This is where most people get an unpleasant surprise, so it’s worth being direct.

Released Value Protection is included at no cost on every California move, and it covers 60 cents per pound per item. That’s a weight-based figure, not a value-based one a five-pound crystal vase is covered for $3.00 regardless of what it cost. It is the state minimum, not real coverage for valuables.

Full Replacement Value Protection is available as an option and covers items at their replacement cost rather than by weight. If you’re moving genuinely valuable pieces, this is the coverage that matters.

For high-value items, photograph each piece before it’s packed and keep the images. Documentation before the move is what makes any claim straightforward afterward.

We’ll walk through both options during your estimate see our FAQs for more on coverage.

What Fragile Packing Costs in San Diego

Packing is billed within your hourly moving rate rather than as a separate line item, so the cost depends on crew size and how long the packing takes.

Crew & truckBest forCashCard
2 movers + 16-ft truckStudio / 1-bedroom$119/hr$129/hr
3 movers + 26-ft truck2-bedroom$159/hr$169/hr
4 movers + 26-ft truck3-bedroom and up$199/hr$209/hr
4 movers + two 26-ft trucks4-bedroom and up$239/hr$249/hr

All packages carry a 3-hour minimum and Double Drive Time as required by California. Truck, hand trucks, 4-wheel dolly, furniture pads, stretch wrap, tape and wardrobe boxes are included at no extra cost.

What adds time: a full china cabinet, a large art collection, or a kitchen packed entirely by us rather than partially. Custom crating is quoted separately because it depends on the dimensions of the piece.

For general moving costs, see our guide to local moving costs in San Diego.

Full Packing or Partial Packing

Full packing means we pack everything you don’t touch a box. Best when you’re short on time, moving a large home, or the household has a lot of breakables.

Partial packing means we handle only the fragile and awkward items kitchen, art, electronics and you do the clothes, books and linens yourself. This is the most common choice, and usually the best value: the items where professional packing genuinely reduces risk get it, and the easy items don’t cost you labour hours.

Either way, packing is booked alongside your local moving or residential moving service so one crew handles the whole job.

Fragile Items in Older San Diego Homes

Access matters as much as packing. In coastal neighbourhoods like La Jolla, San Diego’s 30-foot coastal height limit means much of the multifamily housing is two- and three-storey walk-up with no elevator so fragile boxes are carried down stairs rather than rolled onto a lift. Historic cottages have narrow original stairways and tight doorways.

In Downtown San Diego, the constraint is the opposite: elevators exist, but they’re shared and time-limited, so fragile items need to be staged and moved in planned batches rather than carried ad hoc.

We plan the carry route before anything is loaded, and pad door frames and stair rails where the route is tight.

People Also Ask

Do you provide the packing materials?

Yes. Furniture pads, stretch wrap, tape and wardrobe boxes are included in every package at no extra cost. Specialty materials like dish barrels, picture boxes and custom crates are quoted based on what you’re moving.

Can I pack some things myself and have you pack the rest?

Yes that’s partial packing, and it’s the most common arrangement. Most customers pack their own clothes, books and linens and have us handle the kitchen, art and electronics.

How far in advance should I book packing?

Book packing at the same time as your move, one to two weeks ahead. Packing usually happens the day before the move for larger homes, so it needs its own slot in the schedule.

Are my fragile items insured?

Released Value Protection at 60 cents per pound per item is included at no cost on every move. Full Replacement Value coverage is available as an option and is what we recommend for genuinely valuable pieces. Photograph high-value items before they’re packed.

Do you move pianos and large musical instruments?

Yes pianos are handled as a separate specialty service. See our piano movers San Diego page.

What if something breaks?

Report it to us as soon as you notice it, with photographs. Your coverage level determines the claim: Released Value pays by weight at 60 cents per pound; Full Replacement Value pays replacement cost. This is exactly why we recommend documenting valuable items before the move.
