How Much Does It Cost to Move a Piano in San Diego?

Quick answer

Moving a piano in San Diego typically costs $200 to $400 for an upright piano within the same city, and $250 to $600 for most local moves. Grand pianos, difficult stairs and long carries cost more, because they need extra crew and specialist equipment.

Piano moves are quoted individually rather than sold at a fixed price. The reason is simple: two pianos of the same model can cost very different amounts to move depending on what is between the instrument and the truck.

What makes a piano different from ordinary furniture

A piano is not just heavy. Its weight sits unevenly over three legs, its frame holds several tons of string tension, and its case is easily marked. Tipping one the wrong way can crack a leg or damage the soundboard, and the repair usually costs more than the move.

That is why a piano is treated as a heavy item — any single item over 250 lbs — and why it needs a crew sized for the job rather than a standard two-person booking.

Typical piano weights

Type Typical weight
Spinet or console upright 300–400 lbs
Full upright 400–500 lbs
Baby grand 500–650 lbs
Parlour grand 650–800 lbs
Concert grand 900–1,200 lbs

Weights vary by maker and age, so treat these as a guide. If you know the make and model, tell us when you call and we can be more precise.

The five things that change your price

1. The instrument itself

An upright can usually be moved upright on a piano dolly. A grand has to have its legs and pedal lyre removed and be laid on its side on a padded skid board. That is more work, more people and more time.

2. Stairs

Stairs are the single biggest factor. A ground-floor move with a flat path to the truck is straightforward. The same piano down a narrow staircase with a turn at the bottom may need two extra movers.

3. Access at both ends

How far is the carry from the door to the truck? Is there a lift, and will the piano fit in it? Is there anywhere legal to park? In parts of San Diego — the La Jolla Village, Downtown high-rises, older Chula Vista streets — access is the job.

4. Distance

Local moves within San Diego are billed at our hourly rate with a one-time $50 fuel charge. Long-distance moves elsewhere in California are quoted as a flat rate.

5. When you move

Rates vary by day of the week. Weekends and the end of the month book out fastest.

What our crews cost

Piano moves are built on our standard crew rates:

Crew Cash Card
2 movers and a 16ft truck $119/hr $129/hr
3 movers and a 26ft truck $159/hr $169/hr
4 movers and a 26ft truck $199/hr $209/hr
4 movers and two 26ft trucks $239/hr $249/hr

All rates include Double Drive Time and carry a three-hour minimum. Full details are on our Like Deals page.

Do you only need the piano moved?

Many people call us for the piano alone, not a whole house. If that is you, say so when you book. A single-item piano move is quoted as a flat rate rather than a three-hour hourly booking, which is usually cheaper.

What is included

  • A crew sized for the instrument and the access
  • Piano dolly or skid board, straps and protective moving blankets
  • Removing and refitting the legs and pedal lyre on a grand
  • Floor runners to protect flooring on the route
  • Basic carrier liability, set by California at $0.60 per pound per article

That last point is worth reading twice. Basic liability is calculated by weight, not value. A 500 lb piano is covered for $300 under basic liability regardless of what it is worth. If your instrument is worth significantly more than that, ask us about full-value protection when you book.

One thing to arrange separately

A piano usually needs tuning after it is moved, because the frame settles in its new environment. Give it two to four weeks in the new room before you book a tuner, so the instrument has time to adjust to the humidity and temperature. Tuning is not part of a moving quote.

How to get an accurate quote

Call (858) 222-7227 and have these ready:

  • The type of piano, and the make and model if you know it
  • How many steps at the pickup address, and how many at the delivery address
  • Whether there is a lift, and roughly how far the carry is to the street
  • Any tight doorways or turns
  • Your preferred date

Five minutes on the phone gives you a firm number instead of a range.

Hiring a piano mover in San Diego

Whoever you use, check they are licensed. Household movers in California are licensed by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services and issued a permit number — ask for it, and verify it on (916) 999-2041. Like Movers LLC holds MTR No. 0192555 and USDOT No. 3820244.

Also ask whether the crew has moved your type of piano before, whether they carry cargo insurance, and whether the quote includes everything. A quote that is much lower than everyone else’s usually has something missing from it.
